Liven Up Dinner With Chicken Seasoning Rub

By Anthony Campbell

If you like chicken and want to impart great flavor to it, there are a few ways to do so. A chicken seasoning rub is one way to make it extra flavorful. A rub is different from a marinade, in that it is dry and it is rubbed onto the meat. Different flavor combinations give the poultry a totally different taste. It's a good idea to play around with different seasonings to find the flavor that you enjoy. Packets that are already put together can also be found at most grocery stores. Simply open the packet and massage it into the poultry.

When you decide to use these spices, it's important to do so in advance, they need time to work their way into the meat. Don't worry though, it doesn't take long, it can be less than 20 minutes, or as much as two hours. It's up to you and your time constraints. Just make sure that if there is skin on the poultry, that you get it under it so you get the most flavor.

These are so easy to create at home, that many cooks choose to do so. They are economical and creating them yourself means that you control the ingredients. If you are limiting salt intake, this is a good idea since many pre-packaged ones contain a high amount of salt. Your own creations will also have more of the flavors that you love, you can leave out flavors that you don't like.

Those who like some kick, will love this spicy option. Use the suggested flavor combinations, or come up with your own. Cayenne pepper, and chili powder add a nice spicy flavor when combined with black pepper, onion and garlic powder and paprika. For less spice leave the cayenne out.

Those who would like a sweeter taste, can add some brown sugar to the mix, and take out the cayenne pepper. If you like it a little sweet and a little spicy, leave the cayenne in. You can't go wrong with these recipes, they are all about what you like.

Now, if you're someone who doesn't really like spice, and doesn't really like sweet, but would rather have something in the middle, there is definitely something for you. Smoked paprika and dry mustard help give this rub something that's perfect for the person who is somewhere in the middle. Add these two ingredients along with cumin, powdered garlic and onion, brown sugar, ginger and black pepper.

so you're not rushing around in the kitchen on busy days, make these up in advance. They store well when they are placed in airtight containers. Remember, that they do need time to soak into the poultry. A good rule of thumb is, the longer it sits on the meat, the more flavorful it will be. Some people like to score the poultry in order to get added flavor.

If you have the idea that these are only great for poultry, you would be wrong. These are also perfect for other meats, such as beef and pork. Try them, you won't be disappointed. Also, now that you have some basic recipes, expand your culinary skills by coming up with some of your own. It's easy to do and fun. Experiment, you may just come up with a flavor profile that you absolutely love. Don't be afraid, experimenting is what cooking is all about.
