Virginia City Ghost Town Tours

By Matthew Stewart

It is probably natural that one of the best known 'ghost towns' should feature plenty of stories about ghost sightings. Virginia City ghost town tours will feature visits to some of the most haunted locations in the country. Promoters and researchers alike delve into these stories and visitors shiver in anticipation of seeing one of the unworldly manifestations. The spirits appear as lights, figures, scents and sounds. Read on to learn more about one of the unique aspects of Virginia City.

The County Courthouse - The ghost of a man named Peter Larkin has been seen behind the building. He was found guilty of murder and was hanged for the murder. His mistress originally lied for him, but later recanted, leading to his guilty sentence. The building as one of those burned in the Great Fire, but was rebuilt in 1876.

St. Mary Louise Hospital was built in 1864 and is now known as the St. Mary's Art Center. Visitors claim to have seen a man in a wheelchair in one of the room. There is another tale of a man who perished in a fire in the hospital and a nurse perished in the blaze during an attempt to save him.

Silver Terrace Cemetery - No ghost tour would be complete with a visit to a cemetery and this particular location has its share of sightings. During the years from 1853 to 1880 there were a number of deadly mining accidents with nearly three hundred reported deaths. At the cemetery, some of the reports include a glowing headstone, the ghost of a girl roaming the headstone rows or various blue lights seen at night.

Piper's Opera House - The one-time owner of the cultural and entertainment venue, John Piper, has been seen looking from the window on the second story and also in the theater's box seats. The balcony has been the location for a woman who appears there. The sounds of previous performers can also be heard in the premises.

Elizabeth - In a town noted for its apparitions, the Mackay Mansion may have the highest count, seven in total. Elizabeth is a young girl who Johnny Depp claimed to have seen there. An Asian miner with long hair is said to be warning people about a fire there. A man smoking a pipe has appeared on the balcony. In addition, there is a ghostly woman who has been seen roaming the first floor of the mansion as well as the carriage house and dining area.

William and Rosie - The Gold Hill Hotel and Miner's Cabin is another location where there have been manifestations. Rosie was a prostitute who can be identified by the smell of her perfume. William was a previous owner of these premises and can be found in Room 5 of this lodging where he enjoys a cigar. Another spirit is that of a little girl who wanders throughout the third floor of the premises.

The Washoe Club - Lena, a prostitute wearing blue dress climbs the spiral staircase to the second floor. Some claim this to be the most haunted building in the entire town. At least a dozen untimely deaths are reported in this building, one a suicide as recently as the 1990s.
