Looking For And Buying Turntable Needles

By Stephen Schmidt

A lot of people have large music collections on record and will need a deck to play their vinyl. Modern day music is usually sold on CD or downloaded as an mp3 track and some spare parts for audio equipment can be tricky to locate. If you need to find and buy turntable needles, you will have to find a supplier that can sell you product that is compatible with your existing stylus.

The needle is a vital part of your sound system due to it being the only physical connection between disc and turntable. When the needle is old, worn out or damaged it will need replacing to produce good quality audio and to avoid damaging your vinyl. There are many types of needle and it is very important that you buy and fit one of the correct specification.

One of the best places to find a stylus for your turntable is at professional audio equipment store in your local area. These stores will have knowledgeable staff and they tend carry good stocks of these items. If the store does not have your particular needle in stock they may be able to order one in from the factory.

The internet is a useful place to find a replacement needle and there are many audio companies that sell stock on the web. You will need the manufacturers name and the serial number of your stylus which will allow you to compare it to their stock. If you do not have the details of your stylus, many of the web based suppliers can find you a suitable match, if you email them a good quality photograph of your existing needle.

Web based auction sites are also useful when you are looking for a stylus and you may save money when you buy in this way. Their web pages will feature a quality color photograph and detailed description to allow you to make comparisons. If you have any concerns about an item, you can contact the seller directly, before placing a bid or making an offer.

If you are finding it hard to locate a stylus, turntable manufacturers may be able to help. Some of the factories will have a good stock of needles for new, old and obsolete record players that they have produced. If they do not have a suitable replacement in their store room they may be able to suggest another supplier that can help you.

It is preferable to use a manufacturer original stylus when possible. Aftermarket needles are available and they will usually perform well but some caution should be exercised when using non original items. When you are buying, it is well worth taking your old needle with you, so that you can compare it to any potential purchases.

Record deck needles are very delicate and they need special care to keep them in prime condition. If you do not fit a new stylus straight away, keep it in the original box until you need it. When you purchase a new needle you should retain your receipt which will be needed if you wish to return or exchange the item.
